Cardinals news from a Sabermetric point of view

Yeah, what WE said

I couldn’t resist clicking through to this intriguing table on Yahoo Fantasy Sports today:

Top 5 non-5×5 stats that you’d include in your league
Brandon Says: Mike Says: Matt Says:
  1. OPS
  2. K/BB (hitter & pitcher)
  3. Runs Created

    [(H + BB + HBP - CS - GIDP) times (Total bases + .26[BB - IBB + HBP] + .52[SH + SF + SB])] divided by (AB + BB + HBP + SH+ SF)

  4. Holds
  5. OPS allowed
  1. OBP
  2. K/BB
  3. OPS
  4. K/9

True measure of dominating opposing hitters

  5. Total Bases
  1. OPS
  2. Total Bases
  3. Complete Games
  4. Total Bases Allowed
  5. OBP

Moneyball yet to infiltrate 5×5 leagues

For the leagues in which I have more or less of a say in determining stat categories used, I suppose Mike’s requests are most applicable: We’ve “pioneered” the replacement of BA with OBP for a few years now, as well as the use of TB rather than HR. And this year, in our NL league, we’ve added K/BB as a replacement for Losses, with which we had an ill-advised flirtation for a couple of seasons.

However, all three “experts” name OPS atop their wish-lists, something that I can’t understand, since OPS has gained currency in recent years as a “one-stop” stat for a players’ offensive ability. Presumably these guys don’t advocate doing away with all the other O stats, so I question the logic there. Brandon’s K/BB for both hitter and pitcher is a little odd, too, as is Mike’s claim that K/9 is the “true measure of dominating opposing hitters.” The Nats’ John Patterson fell something short of dominating Met hitters yesterday: though he struck out eight in three innings, he yielded seven hits and four earnies.
