Invitation: Ceremony for Stars’ Park marker
As our readers may recall, the Bob Broeg Chapter’s Ballpark Marker Committee has been tirelessly working to garner support for and implement markers at the locations in St. Louis where professional baseball has been played. The committee’s latest achievement has been to establish a marker at the site of the Negro National League Stars’ Park in Midtown St. Louis, home to, among others, Cool Papa Bell, winner of our online poll for All-Region Team centerfielder. Following is the formal invitation; the public is welcome and invited to attend.
The Bob Broeg Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research cordially requests the honor of your presence at the formal dedication of a freestanding marker at the site of the Negro National League Stars’ Park.
The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at 11:00 AM on the 3100 block of Market Street, just east of Compton Avenue, near the athletic field of Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis.
The park built for the Stars opened on Sunday, July 9, 1922. Negro National League Champions in 1928 and 1930, the Stars played there until early in 1931. Stars players enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame include James Thomas "Cool Papa" Bell, George "Mule" Suttles, and Willie Wells.
We sincerely hope that you can join us on this special occasion. For questions, or to RSVP, call Joan Thomas at 314 664-0193 or email to Jth8751400@aol.com.
