Cardinals news from a Sabermetric point of view

By the numbers: Dodgers 5, Cardinals 4

  • Adam Kennedy, at $2.5 million, we understand, but is Jim Edmonds being paid $11 million to be a platoon player? Then again, with Jim striking out seven out of 10 plate appearances (and five straight) vs. Wolf, we’d bench him, too. Which begs the question: Was the extension a mistake?
  • It’s probably safe to say that Kip Wells won’t be getting that $25,000 bonus for being an All-Star selection.
  • John Rooney’s a fine announcer, but he needs to learn how to say Nomar’s last name.
  • When the team has two of its best hitters (Duncan, Edmonds) on the bench in favor of a couple of Sikeston outfielders, maybe we shouldn’t expect more than four runs. Duncan’s career platoon splits: .319 GPA vs. RHP, .229 vs. LHP. Note: Just because a guy has a platoon differential, it doesn’t necessarily mean he gives you a platoon advantage. And in the case of the two backup outfielders the Cardinals used last night, So Taguchi and Ryan Ludwick, they don’t have either (both hit righties better). Duncan has a much worse GPA vs. LHP (245) than vs. RHP. But Ludwick’s GPA vs. LHP is .232, and Taguchi is .247.
  • When we said that Wells needed to cut down on his walks, we weren’t kidding. 6?
  • So is Wainwright hurt, or is he healthy?
  • Will Eckstein return to the leadoff spot in Detroit? Maybe he shouldn’t:
    Player #1 #8
    Kennedy .238 .142
    Eckstein .191 .240

Neither batter is setting the world on fire, but it would seem that Eckstein is able to handle himself better in the #8 spot than Kennedy. Something to consider.

  • Baseball games would be more enjoyable if more players used Led Zeppelin for at-bat music. Like Luis Gonzalez (Immigrant Song).
