Cardinals news from a Sabermetric point of view

Sabermetric MVP: Wright edges out Pujols and Peavy

His team collapsed monumentally down the stretch, but it wasn’t because David Wright did. Wright closed the season with a 17-game hitting streak and totalled 21 Win Shares Above Bench to leap ahead of Jake Peavy, who had been leading in our Sabermetric MVP rankings since the beginning of September, and win. Albert Pujols, who also gained two WSAB in the final two weeks of the season and bolstered his Win-Probability Added, finished a very close second:

# Name Tm Pos WSAB WPA MVP
Wright NYN 3B 21 4.09 11.09
Pujols STL 1B 19 4.65 10.98
Peavy SD SP 18 4.79 10.79
Cabrera FLA 3B 18 4.61 10.61
Fielder MIL 1B 15 5.24 10.24
Holliday COL OF 15 5.06 10.06
Utley PHI 2B 17 3.78 9.45
Jones ATL 3B 15 4.23 9.23
Webb ARI SP 17 3.35 9.02
Ramirez CHN 3B 12 4.55 8.55
Helton COL 1B 11 4.80 8.47
Gonzalez SD 1B 13 4.07 8.40
Penny LAN SP 17 2.72 8.39
Bonds SF OF 12 4.33 8.33
Howard PHI 1B 14 3.48 8.15
Ramirez FLA SS 16 2.45 7.78
Oswalt HOU SP 14 3.11 7.78
Saito LAN RP 10 4.27 7.60
Berkman HOU 1B 12 3.54 7.54
Rollins PHI SS 13 3.20 7.53

Pujols turned it on after his team was eliminated from playoff consideration, but Peavy, whose Padres wound up tied for the wild card, received an extra start, and failed to pitch to his season standards and ended up costing himself our MVP award. Speaking of the wild canard, Rockies Todd Helton and Matt Holliday bumped up in the rankings after their clinching victory Monday (though Holliday still hasn’t touched home plate).
