Cardinals’ Sabermetric Spring-Training Stats: Pitchers
This year, we’re adding Pitching Runs Created to the Cardinals’ Sabermetric Spring-Training stats. PRC uses a run-environment factor, which isn’t unimportant given the weirdness of spring-training games (though, like all spring stats, it’s virtually meaningless!). So far, the Grapefruit League teams are averaging around five runs scored per game; we’ll perhaps update that factor as the spring wears on. As for the Cardinal pitchers, yesterday afternoon’s starter, Mike Parisi, is pitching better than his traditional numbers (and the MLB.com headline) indicate. And in all of nine batters faced, Kyle McClellan has the hot hand (arm?), sporting a 1.20 FIP and an Erik Bedard-like 12.7 K/G.

In the future, you can see the latest hitting and pitching stats by clicking 2008 Sabermetric Spring-Training Stats in the sidebar. For those not familiar with the pitching stats, here’s what we’re using:
- BF: Batters Faced, which is a better indicator of a pitcher’s workload than innings pitched, since he’s not responsible for balls hit into play
- PRC: Pitching Runs Created
- FIP: Fielding-Independent Pitching ERA
- K/BB: Strikeout-to-Walk ratio
- K/G: Strikeouts per game (using 38 as the average number of batters faced per game)
- HR/G: Home runs allowed per game
