Cardinals news from a Sabermetric point of view

Bartow and Strauss headline Hot Stove Luncheon

By Jim Rygelski, Bob Broeg Chapter President

A panel discussion of media coverage of the Cardinals and several research presentations on various topics will highlight the Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, Hot Stove League Luncheon of the Bob Broeg Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

The meeting, at Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood, 620 Market St. (across the street from Busch Stadium), begins with a noon ballpark buffet luncheon. Panelists for the discussion that begins right after lunch are Brian Bartow, director of media relations for the Cardinals; Joe Strauss, baseball beat writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; another St. Louis media person may be joining the discussion.

Following their discussion, several SABR members will give presentations. Topics include Cardinals’ World Series rings, the 1919 Cincinnati Reds (the N.L. champions largely forgotten by the Black Sox scandal), pitching feats of 1959 and whether great ballplayers should retire earlier than they have.

The afternoon will conclude about 4 p.m. after a trivia contest.

Cost is $25 for those registering by Jan. 17, and $30 after that and at the door. The price includes lunch, soft drinks and beer. Send check made out to Bob Broeg Chapter-SABR to Fred Heger, 9388 White Ave., St. Louis, MO 63144.
