Cardinals news from a Sabermetric point of view

Pujols, Votto vie for Sabermetric Triple Crown

As the new-old rivals Reds and Cardinals begin their decisive showdown series, the teams’ mirror-image first basemen have something on the line in addition to their teams’ playoff hopes: the Sabermetric Triple Crown. They’re neck-and-neck in the traditional triple crown, but check out how they stack up in OBP, Total Bases and Runs Created:

RK PLAYER TEAM OBP
1 Joey Votto CIN .424
2 Albert Pujols STL .407
3 Prince Fielder MIL .402
RK PLAYER TEAM TB
1 Carlos Gonzalez COL 296
2 Albert Pujols STL 292
3 Joey Votto CIN 276
RK PLAYER TEAM RC
1 Joey Votto CIN 112.1
2 Albert Pujols STL 111.3
3 Carlos Gonzalez COL 104.0

Votto appears to have the edge, ahead of Pujols in two of the three categories, along with a not-inconsequential park advantage. However, the RC race is too close to call, as they say, and both players have Carlos Gonzalez to contend with in total bases. We’ll keep an eye on it as the teams play this weekend.
