Cardinals news from a Sabermetric point of view

A changing of the Cards’ WAR guard?

John Mozeliak notes that the Cardinals “still think we have some holes.” One is right field, stomach and Carlos Beltran would fill it well.

Despite currently polling at Fungoes as the Cardinals

Interesting analysis. I like graphs that lay the issue out so clearly. I’ve been reading Fungoes for a few months now and am a SABRE newbie. Long time Cardinal fan who has lived in the Bay Area for the last 16 yrs…but Cards are still my team (sloooowly warming to Bay Area teams)

Wonder if you can answer a few questions:
    (1) Do you prefer Fangraphs over the other WAR formula? If so, why?
    (2) I’m assuming the Holliday/Pujols difference is due to position played and fielding performance?
    (3) What, in your opinion, is the best reference to consult for learning about WAR ?

    To answer your questions…

    1. I use both at different times. I like B-ref because it has historical WAR, but I prefer Fangraphs’ formula because of its defensive calculation and use of fielding-independent stats for pitchers. Dave Cameron recently wrote on the differences.

    2. I believe that is correct, yes.

    3. Fangraphs has several good articles. Have you seen those?

Thanks for reading and welcome to the world of sabermetrics! One benefit of being in the Bay area is that you at least get to watch some post-season ball!
