[...] Among others, Vicente Padilla, Woody Williams and now Greg Maddox have signed free-agent contracts already this winter. The Cardinals have signed Kip Wells and now need at least one more starter. They may decide to go the trade route, as we reviewed Monday, or they may land one of the remaining free agents, as they reportedly already have offers outstanding to Jeff Suppan, Jason Schmidt and Miguel Batista. What can they reasonably expect to pay in this intriguing seller’s market? Based on the signings that have already occurred, we projected the average annual salary for the remaining free agents using factors of Pitching Win Shares, Career Win Shares, Age and Games Started from 2005-2006.
[...] What do you get when you cross a strikeout-prone lefty hitting only .130 vs. lefthanded pitching this season, and a LOOGy who strikes out southpaws at a 9.78 clip? As TLR says, you give Jenkins credit; the beating of the odds is one of the glories of baseball. With the advantage of 20-20 hindsight, as hot as Goff is, the better scenario would probably have been to not challenge him with anything hittable (or even a peanut-butter sandwich) and, if necessary, unintentially walk the guy. I know I’ve got a big support group. It’s definitely nice when you see that from the fans. It’s pretty awesome. And they get a baseball, too. – “Goff” Jenkins, referring to the fans with the “Keep Jenkins” sign just behind him in right field [...]
